South Dakota is named after the Lakota & Dakota Sioux American Indian tribes of the Midwest USA. Once a part of the Dakota Territory, South Dakota became a state on November 2, 1889.
The United States of America acquired the region in the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, and it was explored by Lewis and Clark during 1804 - 1806.
