Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia Settled as a palisaded outpost against the Indians in 1663, when it was named Middle Plantation, it became the capital of Virginia in 1699 & received its present name in honor of William III of England. It was incorporated as a city in 1722 & throughout the period preceeding the American Revolution reflected the leadership & influence of the Virginia Colony.
