A Mountain Vacation Land. In the summer of 1874 General George A. Custer & the 7th U.S. Cavalry, accompanied by geologists & newspaper men, investigated reports that roving miners had found gold in the Black Hills. Native American Indian lore considered the Black Hills to be the abiding place of the Great Spirit, & trespassers would gain the ill will of the Spirit. When the white man heard about gold in the Black Hills, he had no such superstition & in 1876 the settlement of the Black Hills started. For the traveler who likes the conveniences of civilization, along with a vacation spirit there are modern hotels, sporty golf courses, & splendid highways, over which he may travel to his heart's content. The clean air, perfumed with the breath of pines, the rollicking streams dancing from sunshine to shadow & the calm beauty of the mountains afford restfulness derived only from such surroundings.
